Highlights of the First Training Course on Space Light Modulators

In the era of ever-changing science and technology, spatial light modulator, as an important optical device, is widely used in the fields of adaptive optics, optical microscopy, optical field modulation, optical information processing, optical computation, and optical communication. In order to help optical practitioners and researchers to have a comprehensive understanding of spatial light modulator devices, the first training course on the topic of spatial light modulators was held on October 31, 2023 in Beijing. With the theme of technology sharing and experimental demonstration, this training course aims to provide a platform for learning and communication.

First of all, we invited several experts and scholars in the industry to share their technologies. They introduced the basic introduction and application of spatial light modulators from different perspectives, the application of phase-type spatial light modulators in holographic optics, 3D display technology based on spatial light modulators, high-fidelity computational holographic display technology based on model-driven deep learning, the progress of the application of phase-type liquid-crystal spatial light modulators, the application of liquid-crystal spatial light modulators in vortex optics, the application of illumination and aperture modulation, and the development of liquid crystal spatial light modulators at home and abroad. Through their lectures, everyone gained a deeper understanding of spatial light modulators, which also aroused great interest and triggered a lively discussion.

Second, we organized a series of experimental demonstrations. These experiments demonstrate the specific application effects of spatial light modulators in different application scenarios. For example, high-fidelity color computational holographic display system demonstration, depth-of-focus expansion and turbulence robust STOB structure light field modulation demonstration, digital implementation of optical holography system demonstration, SLM-based atmospheric turbulence, optical system and photophotography system demonstration, SLM-based scattering imaging, color holography system and color holography system demonstration, amplitude-type spatial light modulators use and common functions demonstration, transmission-type digital Optics Teaching System and Function Demonstration, Phase-based Spatial Light Modulator Use and Common Functions Demonstration, Reflective Digital Optics Teaching System and Function Demonstration, and so on.

During the lab demonstrations, we provided spatial light modulator equipment as well as optical paths with professional instructors. Everyone had the opportunity to personally operate the spatial light modulator, adjust the phase and amplitude of light, and observe the modulation effect. Through the practical operation, everyone gained a deeper understanding of the working principle and usage of spatial light modulators, and also more intuitively felt the great potential of spatial light modulators in the field of optics.

At the end of the training, we awarded each participant with a training certificate and a souvenir. These certificates and souvenirs are not only a recognition of their hard work during the training, but also a kind of encouragement for their future career.

Through the one-day theoretical and operational learning, the trainees have gained a comprehensive understanding of the working principle, performance parameters, application direction and precautions for the use of spatial light modulators. We believe that through this training, the spatial light modulator will become a better “dimmer” in our future scientific research work, and we are looking forward to learning and exploring the mysteries of spatial light modulators with more friends to jointly promote the development of this field.
